Salesforce Invitation XV – 22 – The Media Nomads – 27

On a day when there was some serious rain about, it managed to stay away from Richmond Rugby Club for the entire duration of the mixed touch tournament, and the XV aside game against The Media Nomads. The sun quite clearly shines on the righteous.

After a few months of Jonathan Bower (JB) from Intagralis canvassing for players across the ecosystem we managed to get a team out made up of people across the ecosystem. Players came from Sapiant i7, Salesforce, FinancialForce, Gearset, Introhive, Artesian, Salestrip, Talkdesk, Loucas, Intagralis and some other recruitment companies.

Nadio Granata and the James Collett helped secure sponsors with Natterbox being the premier sponsor on the day, and in conjunction with JB managed to put on an event that was great fun, and helped raise money for Youth Enquiry Services (Y.E.S).

The Media Nomads are a team that have been going for a number of years, and as the name suggests are made up from people across the advertising and media sector. Charlie Curtis did a great job of getting a side out. They were good players, and good blokes.

This was the first outing for the Salesforce team. The one thing we didn’t know was the relative strength of the two teams, but as you can see from the score, the teams were well matched and put on a great display of committed and on occasions, skilful rugby.

Now this reporter was not paying enough attention to know the exact order of things, but The Nomads scrum half scored the first try giving the nomads a 0-5 lead.

However by half time Jack Weatherly of Gearset had scored two tries and Ash Hallett (capt) of Talkdesk had also crashed over for one. So 15 – 5 at half time.

The Nomads had the edge in the scrum and in their scrum half they had a real crackerjack of a player. The number 9 got another try, as did one of their wingers, and one of those was converted.

For the Salesforce XV the rangy Greg Firth from SalesTrip scored a try under the posts which was also converted. For those of you doing the maths that is 22 -22.

In the 78th Minute, The Nomads were awarded a penalty, and the Nomads scrum half (yes him again) took a quick tap and dived into the corner to score what was to be the winning try, and his third.

So The Media Nomads sneaked it, but both sides had put in a solid performance.

Rob Johnson (FinancialForce) led the pack. Dan Dingley (Artesians Solutions) & Jamie Talbot (Sapienti7) shared the scrum half duties by doing a half each, and both playing well.

Adam Roberts (Introhive) kept Delon Armitage (former England player) on the bench for the start of the match, with Delon coming on when someone got a knock.

The front row had to work hard and with the combative hooker Matt Hobson (Loucas) playing the whole game, the 3 props rotated based on tiredness and injury.

Ben Tozer (Gearset), Jody Freeman (Intagralis) & David Llewellyn-Tosh all arguing about what side they would go on all put in a shift with David ending the game what can only be described as “hurty ribs”

Some mentions for Harry Cheetham (Salesforce) who got man of the match for his non stop barn storming runs. Jack Weatherly (Gearset) got two tries, and was stopped inches short for his third.

The Salesforce team were well marshalled by Sean Flynn (Intagralis) at 10, and he had the benefit of having the direct approach of Ash Hallett (Talkdesk), and the skill and experience of Delon Armitage (former England international and complete ringer who has nothing to do with Salesforce) outside him.

Rob Johnson (FinancialForce) led the pack. Dan Dingley (Artesians Solutions) & Jamie Talbot (Sapienti7) shared the scrum half duties by doing a half each, and both playing well.

I should also mention Matt Dew & Chris Lewis & Charlie Kelly who all had great games.

So a great game, played in a great spirit, at a great venue.

So now for the post match activity. Good old fashioned winter fare of pie and veg followed by crumble & cream, all washed down with lashings of beer.

JB did a quick auction which saw 5 people walk away with 3 x magnums of red wine which they had all over paid for, and hence contributed to the fund raising.

JB then interviewed Charlie Hodgson who gave some interesting and amusing insights into his life as a professional rugby player and the highs and lows of that life.

He talked about the pressures and stress involved in elite sport and how he is now helping people in business deal with stress at work. There was then a Q & A session where Charlie was able to fill in the gaps on betting scandals to fights in England training sessions.

It was then socialising and having a few beers.

We will do this again. We will look to have a bigger mixed touch tournament, a deeper squad, and of course a victory.
